Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Born in Bombay, Yusuf Ali (1872-1953) belonged to a wealthy family of merchants. He studied English literature at the University of Leeds and travelled widely in Europe and North America, promoting the Indian contribution to the first world war. He was a respected intellectual in India and Sir Muhammad Iqbal recruited him to be the principal of Islamia College in Lahore, British India. His translation of the Qur’an is one of the most widely-known and used in the English-speaking world.
