Behind the Scenes: Let’s visit the Three Sacred Mosques Pop-up Collection

by Sara Khan

This blog post delves a little bit deeper into the inspiration and educational thinking behind my new children’s book series; Let’s visit the three sacred mosques pop-up collection.

Inspired by my own travels to the three sacred mosques (Masjid al-Haram, Masjid al-Nabawi and Masjid al-Aqsa), which all play a significant role in Islam, I decided I wanted to create beautiful, accessible board books that would make children fall in love with them.

Having seen first hand the amount of cats that are present at these holy sites and knowing children’s positive association with animals and in particular my own daughter’s love for cats, I decided to write each book from the perspective of a little cat called Huraira, making the books educational yet playful at the same time.

Through the additional pop-up surprises that feature in each of the books, transforming passive reading into an interactive, multi-sensory experience, I hope to further evoke a positive connection between the sites and the children reading my books.

By establishing a lifelong link with these sacred sites and a desire to want to visit them from an early age, I hope that these books will stay with children until they Insha’Allah get to visit them in person and perhaps even pass the books down to their own children in the future.
