The Beauty That Lasts - All The Ways To Be Pretty In Islam
When a little girl is told she is “pretty,” her eyes light up. The word carries weight, joy, and approval.
However too often, that word is tied only to her reflection, the curve of her smile, the shimmer of her hair, the way she looks on the outside.
In Islam, beauty has never been confined to appearances. Our tradition teaches us that true beauty is the radiance of a purified heart: a heart that is kind, sincere, and filled with remembrance of Allah (swt)
Outward beauty fades with time, but the beauty of character grows brighter with every act of compassion, every moment of patience, and every step towards Allah (swt).
All the Ways to Be Pretty was born from this understanding. It invites Muslim girls to imagine “pretty” differently to see themselves as pretty wise, pretty brave, pretty thoughtful, pretty pious. It reframes beauty as something they carry within them, something that no mirror could ever fully capture.
This reimagining matters. Because our daughters deserve to know that their worth is not measured in how they appear to others, like shown in glossy magazines or mesmerising screens but in how their hearts shine before their Creator.
When they learn that their truest beauty lies in their character, their courage, and their closeness to Allah, they are freed to dream, to aspire, and to grow without limits and that is the kind of beauty that truly lasts.
All the Ways to Be Pretty - Shamaila Khan
What do you do when your daughter just wants to be pretty like the girls she sees on screens and magazines?
All the Ways to be Pretty aims to provide parents with a starting point for conversations about beauty from an Islamic perspective.
All humans are beautiful in their own unique ways, and this book is not about diminishing that gift. It is a gentle reminder that beauty is also what lies on the inside; our character and our actions beautify us, so why be 'just pretty' when you could be ‘pretty wise’ like Khadijah RA, ‘pretty smart’ like Aisha RA, or ‘pretty brave’ like Sumayya RA!
