In Conversation With Marium Kapadia - Little Umar's Search

How did you start your journey as an author of Islamic children's books?

I started my journey as an author when I moved to London with my family and found a lack of engaging Islamic books for my pre-readers. As a result, I started writing stories to teach Islamic values to my children.

What inspired you to write your latest book on introducing different forms of worship to children?

As a mother, I wanted my children to learn about the different forms of worship in Islam at an early age. However, I found that there were not many resources available that were engaging and age-appropriate for young children. This inspired me to write a book that would introduce these concepts in a fun and interactive way.

Can you tell us a little about your approach to writing books for children?

My approach to writing books is instinctive. I believe in using simple, repetitive texts, and rhymes that enable pre-schoolers to grasp and understand the content faster and ingrain it in their minds forever.

I also use sensory materials and interactive features to keep children engaged and interested.

How do you come up with ideas for your books?

I draw inspiration from my own experiences as a mother and from the questions and interests of my own children. I also listen to feedback from parents and educators to identify topics and concepts that are important for children to learn about. Ultimately, I try to create stories that are not only informative but also entertaining and enjoyable for young children to read.

What are some of the challenges you face as a children's author?

One of the biggest challenges I face is making sure that my books are both engaging and educational. It can be difficult to strike the right balance between the two, but I always try to make sure that my books are both fun and informative.

What advice would you give to parents who want to teach their children about Islam?

I would encourage parents who want to teach their children about Islam to start by modelling Islamic values and practices in their own lives. Children are very observant and will pick up on the things that we do and say. It's also important to create a positive and supportive environment where children feel comfortable asking questions and learning about their faith. Finally, I would recommend incorporating books and other resources that are designed specifically for young children to help reinforce key concepts and teachings.

How important do you think it is for children to learn about Islam at a young age?

I think it's very important for children to learn about Islam at a young age because it helps to build a strong foundation for their faith. It also helps them to understand and appreciate the values and traditions of their culture.

Can you tell us about your background and how it has influenced your writing?

I was born and raised in Mumbai, India, and moved to London with my family several years ago. My background has influenced my writing by giving me a unique perspective on the world and by inspiring me to create stories that reflect my own experiences and values.

What are some of your future plans for writing?

I plan to continue writing books that teach Islamic values to children in a fun and engaging way. I also hope to expand my reach and connect with more families around the world!

How do you balance your role as a mother with your work as an author?

Balancing my role as a mother with my work as an author can be challenging, but I try to make sure that I am always there for my children when they need me. I also set aside time each day to focus on my writing and make sure that I am meeting my deadlines.

What do you hope children will take away from reading your books?

I hope that children will take away a love for learning about Islam and a sense of pride in their faith and culture. I also hope that they will be inspired to live their lives in a way that reflects the values and teachings of Islam.

How has your experience as a mother influenced your writing?

My experience as a mother has had a significant impact on my writing. It has helped me to better understand the needs and interests of young children and to create stories that are engaging and meaningful to them. It has also given me a greater appreciation for the importance of teaching Islamic values to children at a young age.
